Photodynamic Therapy for Skin Cancer and Acne

Photodynamic therapy, often called PDT, is a non-surgical treatment that uses a light-activated medication to treat certain skin concerns. At Rosebranch Dermatology in Friendswood, Texas, PDT may be recommended for precancerous sun damage, select early skin cancers, or acne that has not improved enough with other treatments.

In simple terms, PDT is used to treat sun-damaged spots called actinic keratoses, some carefully selected superficial skin cancers, and certain cases of acne. During treatment, a medication is placed on the skin and then activated with a special light. Afterward, the treated area may become red, tender, flaky, crusted, or more sensitive to light while it heals.

Photodynamic therapy combines a medication that reacts to light with a special light source. Once the medication is activated, it helps destroy the targeted cells.

Your appointment usually starts with a skin evaluation. The treatment area is cleaned, and in some cases, the skin may be gently prepared so the medication can absorb more evenly.

Photodynamic therapy is often used to treat actinic keratoses. These rough, scaly spots are caused by years of sun exposure and are considered precancerous because some can develop into squamous cell carcinoma over time.
